As a young man, Dante came in contact with certain elements of Proven<;al poetry known as the poetry of Courtly Love. Courtly Love poetry was written by noble gentlemen to noble ladies. Several volumes of rules for this practice have survived. The rules consisted of simple prescriptions for proper social relationships, demeanor, and sometimes delicately spoke of the sexual fulfillment of the relationship. Part of the practice included the composition of poems which were sometimes set to music. Dante's own work in this genre is found in La Vita Nuova, a volume of poems addressed to and about Beatrice along with a prose narration and explanation.
