Recognizing that many inmates wash their own clothes, some units allow temporary clotheslines to be strung from bunk to sink. But on most units, none of these things are allowed. The cells must be totally bare except for a Bible and a few cosmetic items on the desk, if there is a desk. Officers on those units are encouraged to go into cells and rip down any photos; to throw away any picture frames; to write disciplinary cases on any inmates who in any way try to personalize their cells or cubicles.

The buildings that house inmates are of a pod-like design—the picket is in the center of the pod, with the cells built around it, and all cell doors face the picket. This allows the picket officer to visually monitor all cells, and Living Quarters 9 the rover, or the officer on the floor, to stay in sight of the picket officer while he walks the blocks. The picket officer, with all door controls at his fingertips, can open one door or all of them as he sees fit, and can open and close one or all pod doors, thus effectively sealing off one block in case of trouble.

All Texas inmates wear white, short-sleeved, pullover shirts and white, slip-on pants. In recent years, TDCJ has done away with belts and buttons. Pants are of a pajama-like, expandable-waist type, without front openings. They are universally derided and detested. On a few units, some inmates with laundry connections have the old button-fly pants with front pockets made especially for them. They wash their own clothes and thus keep their “pocket pants,” as they are called. But the new pants are what are issued and what the vast majority of inmates wear.
